Ordering coffee

Here are some tips how to survive in a café in Ljubljana. Most of the cafes serve also beer and other alcoholic drinks so you might be able to continue your afternoon coffee break till early evening.

How to order?
Usually in every café the table service is a keyword. So just find a free table or chair and sit down. The waiter or waitress will soon appear to ask your order. On the tables you will find menus most often in Slovene.

What to order?
In Ljubljana coffee is at very standard level in each café. To find out which type of coffee is your favourite check the list below:
Kava - Small cup of black coffee
Macchiato - Espresso
Kava z mlekom - Coffee with milk and foam
Kava s smetano - Coffee with whipped cream
Bela kava - Latte
Veliko kava/bela kava - Big portion
Čaj - Tea
Čaj z limono - Tea with lemon

How to pay?
If the waiter doesn't bring you the recept when he/she brings your coffee, you should ask for receipt yourself. The easiest way is to ask "Račun, prosim!" In most places you can pay with credit card but it is more common to pay in cash.

Should I tip?
No, unless the service has been extraordinary good.

Useful phrases:
Dober dan! or Živjo! when you come in.
Prosim. Use it as please in the end of your order.
Račun, prosim! to ask for the check.
Adijo! or Ciao! when you leave
