Cacao or Cocoa?

Cocoa

Enjoy the sun and the yellow chairs. Some shade is available behind the corner.

Want to have coffee with the locals in the city center? If you do, you might want to try Cocoa café right next to the RTV Slovenija headquarters. Located conviniently only three blocks from Prešeren square and equipped with a nice terrace facing south, Cocoa is a good place to have a quick morning cup (only 1€) or just chill in the afternoon after a long day.

PS. There's also a night club downstairs so you can extend your afternoon coffee to a whole night in Cocoa.

Cacao

 Interesting structure of bela kava.

Want to have coffee with the tourists in the city center? If yes, you can choose Cacao as your next destination. Cacao is literally just a stone's throw from Prešeren square, the ground zero of Ljubljana. In Cacao's lovely and lively terrace you can look at the people in the river boulevard or turn your head to the other direction and watch river Ljubljanica flow calmly through the city.

Due to its prime location and target audience the prices are also on the higher end. If you're not feeling lightness in your wallet, make sure to try one of Cacao's sweet specialities with your kava z mlekom, we recommend their tasty and big ice cream portions.

Zvezda

Zvezda's terrace in the corner of Wolfova ulica.

Cakes! A lots of them! And they're all super delicious. Zvezda is the place to celebrate if you want to eat something sweet and creamy. Zvezda is located near the University on Wolfova ulica just next to the city center's only sushi place Sushimama. Zvezda is often full and you might have to wait for few minutes to get a free table for you and your crew.

When you enter Zvezda from the direction of Prešeren square you'll see the selection of cakes and you can choose your favorite. Remember your choice (the showcased cakes are labeled) and tell it to the waiter when he comes to take your order. Oh, and don't forget to order your coffee to go with the cake! If you don't feel like having cake, you can also order one of Zvezda's delicious sandwiches, ranging from three to five euros.

The interior looks fancier than the price level suggests even though Zvezda is not the cheapest place to have coffee. Elegant wallpapers and neat outfits of the waiters differ from the usual café scene in Ljubljana. The music in the background is smooth elevator music, but at least not the newest radio hits. The waiters are polite and they speak good English. Don't hesitate to ask help for selecting your piece of cake.

Coffee in Zvezda is the usual, although you can alsoa variety of special and seasonal coffees. The seasonal specialities usually have a special price too, so we still recommend drinking their smooth bela kava. Unusually for Ljubljana, Zvezda also has proper loose tea.

All coffees are served with small star-shaped cookie. If you enjoy your stay at Zvezda's terrace watch out for sparrows, because they can steal your precious complementary cookie.

Cool yourself with ice cream.

Čajna hiša

Čajna hiša is one way to get some variety to your coffee consumption in Ljubljana. Located at Stari trg 3 in the old town the place is quiet and easy-going. The menu includes pages full of different teas and also the basic one page for coffee options. Čajna hiša is also one of the rare places that serves breakfast in Ljubljana. Details on the breakfast will be available here after we have tried it.

For tea drinkers the place is the mecca in Ljubljana. You can also buy loose tea for yourself from their vast selection, served in nice paper bags. An amount of 300 grams of basic earl grey cost around 8-9 euros. Writers note: loose tea is light, don't buy it in 300 grams portions like I did..

Čajna hiša is at its best at cold winter or autumn days or when it's raining. During those times the seats are crowded. Set your own tea time, grab a newspaper and sip the tea that is served in thick teapots that stay warm for a long while.

Žmauc

 Front wall of Žmauc.

Žmauc on Rimska cesta is a nice and cozy hang-out café with a nice terrace and colorful interior. You can easily find the place if you keep your eyes open for a facade covered in a huge graffiti. Žmauc is one of the most liberal cafés in Ljubljana outside Metelkova, so its usual clients include students from surrounding faculties, hippies and also a surprising amount of old geezers. When it's a nice weather outside, you can be almost alone in the inside but on rainy days Žmauc is usually quite crowded also on the inside.

Bela kava, kava z mlekom and nice list of sandwiches.

Žmauc is one of our favorite cafés in the city because of their open athmosphere, good and versatile background music ranging from The Rolling Stones to 80's funk hits and nice variety of sandwiches. Sometimes we have lunch at nearby Thai Inn Pub just to have an excuse to visit Žmauc. In addition to nice sandwiches Žmauc also offers free WiFi, alcoholic beverages, a mobile phone charging machine (!) and occasional theme nights.
